31 October 2011

Your step on your starter in the morning honey and your car won't go - With the price of petrol on an ever upward spiral I guess some people don't use there cars so much as they used to. Even so it's still unusual to have plants growing out of the road around your vehicle.

Since you gotta go, you better go now - Once summer is over it's hard to find a place to go.

And I can sing like a frog - Sometimes I buy something because I like the look of it. Sometimes I buy something because of the packaging. Occasionally the name is enough to win me over! I always thought the French lacked a sense of humour.

Rocking in the nude, I'm feeling such a dude, it's a rip-off - Only a few years ago people would fill cases like theses with cake mixture, put a little butter cream on the top and sell them as fairy cakes for about 30p. Now they use the same mixture, make the butter cream bright purple, top them with silver sprinkles call it a cup cake and sell it for £2.50!

Real life is tragic - Viewer for 8 mm cine films. This was used to view home movies and other 8 mm films, it saved having to set up a projector and screen and having to darken a room. The film was loaded on it's reel and threaded around the viewer onto an empty real. You then looked through the viewfinder and turned the handle on the side to watch your movie. Today all we have to do is press play on our mobile phones.

And it wouldn't cost me a dime - The sea slowly reclaiming the old Lido swimming pool in Margate. Nobody seems to want it so one piece at a time the sea it taking it back.

She's like a rainbow - Used printer cartridges. Thanks to Epson for designing a printer system where it's almost as cheap to buy a new printer every time you run out of ink.

Remember what the dormouse said - People of my age and older will no doubt remember when Lucozade was special. It was special for several reasons, firstly it always seemed very expensive (for a fizzy drink), secondly it was sold in chemists. Thirdly, it had magical orange cellophane wrapped around the bottle, but most importantly as it says in this 1953 advertisement, it was special because it was used by doctors and nurses in clinics, hospitals, nursing homes and schools!

The men don't know, but the little girls understand - If you have a door at the bottom of your garden why not build a brick wall up against it? Then when someone tries to break through the door what will they find? A brick wall!

Wild horses couldn't drag me away - I remember this puzzle from when I was a very young boy, probably four or five years old. It belonged to my Dad and fascinated me for years until I finally worked out how to do it. The instructions on the packet read "Mount the two Riders on the two Horses without bending, cutting, or in any way mutilating the Cards. It can be done - try it!"

I could be the driver in an articulated lorry - Why is it that you have to pay £23 to have the whole object replaced, when a spring that would probably cost £1 would do nicely. What a waste!

The tax man's taken all my dough - Another warm day and another day by the coast.

15 October 2011

Nothing ever goes as planned - Another day and another beach and as long as this warm weather carries on I can't think of a better place to be. This time it's Sandgate on Kent's south coast.

I want to cross you off my list - There's nothing worse than a leaky groyne. This one is at Herne Bay in Kent.

Long distance information, give me Memphis Tennessee - Lin and I have a couple of friends, Ted and Debi who live in East Tennessee. Every August they go to Memphis for Elvis Week and shortly afterwards we get a big box of Elvis goodies sent to us. This years box has just arrived!

12 October 2011

Back in the box again - With all of our current DIY project drawing to an end it will soon be time to put the tools back in the box and hopefully leave them there for a while.

The city streets are empty now - This afternoon I did something that I haven't done for several years, I walked around Ramsgate Cemetery. Even though it's not far from where we live I'd forgotten just how big it is.

Prettier than anything in the world - The dusk sky over Ramsgate.

Spiders in my eyelids and ghosts in the cheese - This is the 1939 set of Garden Flowers cigarette cards published by WD & HO Wills. They used to belong to my Mum, she passed them onto Lin several years ago. The dried flowers on the right are gypsophila that came from Mum's wedding bouquet.

No matter how many times I look at this page I always see the black and white pansy as a skull and the yellow one above has turned into James Finlayson!

I will be your knight in shining armour - Margate's surfboat The Friend to all Nations became famous in the great storm of 1897, which damaged much of Margate and destroyed the Switchback railway. On the morning of 2 December 1897, thirteen men set out in the surfboat towards the struggling Persian Empire. However the Friend was hit by two waves in quick succession and capsized just off the Nayland Rock. Just four men made it to shore, of whom the medic Charles Troughton died on reaching land. The remaining nine were all beaten to a pulp on the rocks, except for Joseph Epps who was found, barely alive, underneath the capsized boat. This is the memorial to those men, it stands on Margate's seafront, near The Nayland Rock Hotel.

Not too thin and not too fat - Today Lin and I harvested all the sweetcorn from the allotment. Like last year we've had a pretty good crop.

6 October 2011

He was a bad motorcycle - When I was about eleven or twelve I thought that once I was old enough I would join an outlaw motorcycle gang. I also thought that this necklace would help me fit in with the other bikers. Never did join that gang!

Ten payments are due - Riding out near Faversham this morning, turned a corner and passed an old metal barn with this sorry looking mini sitting in it.

Please don't tell me that you're sorry - Another Thanet landmark that seems to of been forgotten about and left to slowly decay. This is the pavilion in Winterstoke Gardens and it's long past it's best.
